On entering Lalibela Safari Lodge in South Africa last year, I was completely captivated by the Nguni hides adorning the floors throughout the interiors. Their beauty and uniqueness literally took my breath away. The Nguni has been expertly crafted by African nature. Their dramatic colour is intensified by exquisite patterns and their texture is velvet to the touch. They are quite simply in a class of their own.

The Nguni cattle come with a rich history, adding a further exoticism to the hides. The herds originated thousands of years ago on the hills of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa and their name is derived from the Zulu tribesmen that tended them. Throughout the ages, the well-being of the cattle herds and the well-being of African men have been so closely connected that the cattle have become part of the spiritual and aesthetic lives of these people. The markings on each member of the herd are said to symbolize people, animals, and events, giving each hide a special story.
